Career
Mohamed El Mourid is a visual artist and photographer who has lived in France for many years. During a four-month residency in Morocco he gathered photographs offered by families, photo-booth portraits and pictures of saints, for an exhibition entitled “Le Royaume du Maroc”, accompanied by a workshop with fine-arts students in which he passed on the techniques he had developed.
Portraits on skin
His work rests on screen printing photographs directly onto stretched animal skins. The nature of the support, the presence or absence of hair and the degree of tanning vary the result while keeping the unity of forms and colours; replacing ink with ox blood gives an almost photographic rendering, with an unprecedented colour and texture, between sepia and nuance. In a spirit close to Arte Povera, as the writer Paul Guérin noted, he reveals the sensitive qualities of a material that is now supple, now stretched to breaking point, and close to life, that of the animal, of the people who use it for music or survival, and of the artist. Between history and testimony, his portraits play on iconoclasm and on a popular Morocco.
