Mohamed Nabili

Saharan sand, moulded, hollowed and incised with signs and Tifinagh letters, then fed with bright pigments: Mohamed Nabili’s work opens, in his own words, “a window on the desert”.

Career

Born in Benslimane in 1952, Mohamed Nabili attended the École des arts appliqués in Casablanca, then trained at the École d’art et d’architecture in Marseille from 1973 to 1976, and taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Aix-en-Provence until 1980. Research into tattooing took him to southern Morocco and to Peru. Back in Morocco in 1992, he devoted himself to painting and to children: he painted murals with young patients at the children’s hospital in Rabat and in Marrakech, and in 1996 created the Nabili Foundation for the child’s imagination. He exhibited from the late 1970s and died on 5 February 2012.

The philosophy of the essential

Ceramics, installation, graphic design and painting: Nabili mastered many techniques to build a pictorial language joining what he had learned elsewhere with the traditions of his roots. Trace, sign, memory and colour are his themes; he restructures the signs of popular arts and calligraphy, frees their symbols and follows their path through the collective unconscious. The desert, for him, was first a philosophy, that of the essential.
