Mounir Fatmi

Antenna cables, typewriters, VHS tapes: Mounir Fatmi builds his work from what our technological civilisation discards, to question language, memory and the images that govern us.

The artist

Career

Born in Tangier in 1970, Mounir Fatmi spent his childhood in Casabarata, where his mother sold children’s clothes in the flea market, a place he would later call his first art school and a “museum in ruins”. At seventeen he left for Rome to study nude drawing and engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts, then trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca and at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He lives and works between Paris, Lille and Tangier.

An archaeology of the present

Video, installation, drawing and sculpture serve a single inquiry, which he places under the triad of language, architecture and machine. Obsolete media become the archives of a future already outdated; calligraphy, saw blades and painted Rubik’s cubes question the transmission of knowledge, the power of images and the ideologies that bind us to them.
