Mustapha Boujemaoui

Painter

Mustapha Boujemaoui

A tea glass becomes a whirlwind, a chair, lips or a body: Mustapha Boujemaoui builds his work on two ideas, transparency and repetition, and on a cultural, never folkloric, gaze at everyday rituals.

Career

Born in Ahfir, in the Oujda region, in 1952, Mustapha Boujemaoui studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Tetouan (1969-1972), the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and earned a DEA in visual arts at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Back in Morocco in 1982, he taught in Oujda, then from 1988 at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, the Regional Pedagogical Centre and the National School of Architecture in Rabat. He received the UNESCO Prize for the Promotion of the Arts in 1995, followed by a residency in the Hassan II Foundation studio at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris.

Transparency and repetition

His early work explored travel, displacement and the passing of time, before he multiplied supports and materials. He paints or glues tea leaves to form glasses that seem transparent, often on newspaper, which becomes a full component of the image: the circularity of the glass speaks of the rhythm of life and of a strong cultural identity. He often returns to old canvases, some begun in 1998 and finished ten years later. He is one of the few Moroccan painters to have moved convincingly from painting into contemporary art.
