Painter
Mustapha Nafi
Black and white, and the void that takes the place of matter: Mustapha Nafi gives space an infinite character, in a painting of contrast that is as philosophical as it is visual.
The artist
Career
A visual arts teacher, Mustapha Nafi has continually renewed his painting since the early 1990s, moving between many artistic worlds. His exhibition “Contraste noir/blanc”, some forty canvases presented by the regional culture directorate at the Mohamed Kacimi gallery in Fez, marked the culmination of his research into a palette dominated by black and white.
The courage of the void
For the critic Driss Issa, Nafi draws his singular style from these two colours, at once imaginative and philosophical, and from a mastered use of the void, a risk few painters take. The painter and critic Saïd Affasi sees in his majestic black a source of dynamism; the duality of black and white speaks of the inner conflicts of our time and invites reflection on the meaning of existence, while the void reaches towards the depths of the human being.
