Painter
Mustapha Yesfi
“Colour is only a pretext; form and gesture are a necessity.” Mustapha Yesfi gives the floor to matter, in reds, yellows, blues, whites and blacks shaped by the Mediterranean light of Granada.
The artist
Career
After studying at the School of Fine Arts in Tetouan, Mustapha Yesfi moved to Belgium in 1977 to attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where in 1981 he won the City of Brussels first prize for drawing from life. He now lives in Granada, whose landscapes, light and artistic life have shaped his work, as has the experience of emigration.
Matter and gesture
Draughtsman and painter, Yesfi works through gradations of colour, brush marks, ink, acrylic and oil; he glues, discards, searches and experiments. A retrospective brought together the stages of research begun in 2013, which he describes as moments of intimate dialogue with himself. His works are held in museums and private collections in Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Greece, Germany, the United Kingdom and Lebanon.
