The artist
Career
Born in Fez in 1973, Nabil El Makhloufi trained at the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) in Leipzig, the cradle of the New Leipzig School, and lives and works in Germany. He exhibits in Europe, Lebanon, Africa and Morocco, and won a prize at the 9th Dak’Art, the Dakar Biennale, in 2010.
Realism and its blind spots
His painting holds realism and abstraction together until one can no longer tell where description ends and symbol begins. Ochres, oranges and blues recall Morocco, which remains, he says, his greatest source of inspiration: daily life, memory, the Qur’an, Sufism, language, the street. Calculation and chance, organic and geometric forms, uncertainty and exaggeration serve a painting that seeks to make thought, feeling and cultural memory tangible, while choosing as its subject the imperfect fragment of human existence.
