Career

Born in Tangier in 1981, Simohammed Fettaka came to art through cinema: in 2007 he attended the summer university of La Fémis in Paris and began making experimental videos. He founded the Cinema Nachia festival at the Cinémathèque de Tanger, then completed a master’s degree in the Experimentation in Arts and Politics programme (SPEAP) directed by Bruno Latour at Sciences Po Paris.

The politics of images

His practice spans photographic series, collage, installation, performance and sound. Starting from collective memory, he questions the political aesthetics carried by images and invites each viewer to reconsider their own sense of self through visual experience. For the cine-concert “Mystère de l’Ouest”, produced by the Centre cinématographique marocain and the Institut français du Maroc, he edited archive footage performed live by nine French and Moroccan musicians, and toured it through Morocco’s main cities.
