Painter
Younes Khourassani
Old lutes and violins that once accompanied the long evenings of the halqa become faces in Younes Khourassani’s paintings: instruments set aside by our time, brought back to life by a kind of alchemy.
The artist
Career
Drawn to painting from childhood, Younes Khourassani took a baccalaureate in visual arts and graduated from the École supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca in 2001. His exhibitions in London, Paris, Brussels, Kuwait and Morocco have established him as one of the most inventive painters of his generation.
The alchemy of instruments
Khourassani collects instruments that have a soul, witnesses of souks and festive gatherings, and integrates them into the picture. Perfectly recognisable, these outside elements are nonetheless absorbed into the painting and given a new appearance: the sound box of a violin or a lute turns into a face, while keeping the relief and accidents of the material that give his works their density. Independent and imaginative, he has forged a language of his own.
