The perfect painting for your home exists: 7 rules to find it

You have a bare wall. You've been staring at it for months. Every painting you see online seems too small, too loud, or just "not quite it". Good news: the perfect painting for your home exists. You just need a little method to find it.

Rule 1: choose the wall before the painting

Look at the wall from the door, from the sofa, from the next room. The wall you see most often is where a painting will change your everyday life the most.

Rule 2: forget about matching the cushions

A painting does not need to match your décor. The best ones bring what the room is missing: a contrast, a texture, a burst of colour or a moment of calm.

Rule 3: go bigger than you think

The most common mistake is a painting that is too small. Above a sofa or sideboard, aim for about two thirds of the furniture's width. A square work like this 100 × 100 cm abstract by Youssef Zouhari becomes the heart of a room; a horizontal one like this 50 × 76 cm piece by Abdelwahab Belkhayat sits naturally above a sofa.

Rule 4: hang it at eye level

Galleries often hang works so that their centre is around 145 to 150 cm from the floor. It's a great starting point at home; above a sofa, go a little lower so the painting and the furniture read as one.

Rule 5: test before you commit

Outline the dimensions on the wall with paper or masking tape, frame included. Live with it for two days. If you keep wishing it were bigger, you have your answer.

Rule 6: watch the light

Morning sun, evening lamps: colours change all day. Avoid direct sunlight on the work, and ask us for a short video to see how the texture catches the light.

Rule 7: fall for an artist, not just a picture

Look at several works by the same artist. You'll quickly see whether it's the colours, the energy or the subject that moves you. Start with Salah Benjkan, Najib Lahrichi, Ahmed Lahmer or Salem Chouata.

The final test: if a painting is still on your mind two days later, it's probably the one.
