Painter
Abbes Saladi
Born in 1950 in Marrakech, Abbès Saladi studied philosophy in Rabat before having to break off his studies for health reasons. Back in his home city in the late 1970s, he devoted himself entirely to painting, self-taught.
The artist
His world is unique in Moroccan art: hybrid creatures, bodies in metamorphosis, birds, fish and plants intertwined, dreamlike architecture. Painted with a precision close to miniature, these visions draw on the Arab-Muslim imagination to invent a fantastic, mysterious world.
He died in Marrakech in 1992, leaving a small and highly sought-after body of work, now one of the most singular in Moroccan painting.
