The artist
Career
Painter, professional photographer, musician, decorator and actor, Abdelilah Rais matured his art for years in discretion, recognised by artists and lovers of contemporary art before the media took notice. In 2018 he exhibited several times in Montreal, notably at the Dar Al Maghrib cultural centre, then returned to Morocco with “Le regard de l’autre” at the BCK Art Gallery.
The gaze of the other
The human being is his source: rejection, worry, love, hatred, separation, the feelings he reads every day in faces before his camera reappear on canvas. For the writer and historian Ismène Toussaint, his figures, though condemned to wander, mostly emerge into light or move towards the divine, carrying a message of hope through the fluidity of their forms, movements and rhythms.
