Painter
Abderrahmane Banana
An artist-teacher, or a teacher-artist: Abderrahmane Banana has devoted his life to painting and to awakening the creative genius he believes lies in every child.
The artist
Career
Moroccan painter Abderrahmane Banana teaches visual arts at the Institut supérieur des beaux-arts. His ideal, however, lies elsewhere: in workshops for very young children, drawn from every social background, where future Moroccan painters can be formed. Inspired by Rousseau’s Émile and by many teaching methods, he works much and speaks little.
Another front
If the founders of modern Moroccan art after independence built the edifice, Banana has taken up the struggle on another front: overcoming the obstacles both of the artist’s profession and of art education in schools, so that aesthetic education helps form citizens proud of their heritage and open to other cultures.
