Painter
Ahmed Louardiri
Ahmed Louardiri painted the way one cultivates: covering every scrap of ground with life, until the garden filled the whole picture.
The artist
Career
Born in 1928 in the Rabat region, Ahmed Louardiri earned his living as a gardener until the age of thirty-one, and at first painted only for his own pleasure, between tasks. Another gardener turned painter, Miloud Labied, discovered his work and introduced him to the architect Mourad Ben M’Barek and to Jacqueline Brodskis, who ran a workshop in Rabat. A first exhibition was organised in 1961; others followed until 1974, the year of his death.
A horror of the void
Self-taught, Louardiri recreated gardens of enchanted luxuriance, where plants, birds, domestic animals, palaces, mosques and figures share every centimetre of the surface. Nothing is left empty: profusion takes the place of perspective, and the repetition of motifs gives his compositions the density of a carpet. Drawn from popular imagination, this enchanted world makes him one of the most singular voices of so-called “naïve” painting in Morocco, a label his inventiveness far exceeds.
