Painter
Bouzaid Bouabid
Bas-reliefs built from fragments of mechanical and electrical devices picked up at random: Bouabid Bouzaid gives form to the anguish of a society torn by the civilisation of the machine.
The artist
Career
Born in Tetouan in 1953, Bouabid Bouzaid is an artist, heritage specialist and art historian, and one of Morocco’s experienced restorers of paintings: he has restored works by Mariano Bertuchi, among others. For him, restoration is more art than science, requiring a precise knowledge of the work’s technique, period and support, as much as microscopes, X-rays and chemistry, and he calls for better conditions of storage, transport and display for Morocco’s artistic heritage.
Stigmata of the machine
His recent works offer an unvarnished look at reality, in contrast with the cruel vanity of contemporary society. Industrialisation leaves behind emptiness, inhuman materials and solitude; Bouzaid composes a synoptic journey through the scars of the system, inviting the viewer to open their eyes for the time of a glance.
