The artist
Career
Painter, writer, critic and regional inspector of visual arts, Brahim El Haissan has also been editor-in-chief of the review Taqafat Sahara. He exhibits rarely: in 2000 he presented “Traces de traces”, a poetic evocation in blue and white of the clothing of desert women, made with tarlatan, a material he had just discovered; later, “Traces nomades”, shown at the Municipal Museum of Amazigh Heritage in Agadir, was conceived to travel for a year.
The soul of the south
His works are not the product of sudden inspiration but of long research worthy of a historian or ethnographer. Rounds, crosses, squares, faded colours and braids are drawn from craft, then combined by association and contrast and overlaid with quick, coloured strokes tending towards abstraction. As the critic Daniel Couturier wrote, El Haissan translates the double soul of his country, faithful to the past and drawn to the future, in a style characteristic of southern Morocco.
