Painter
Chafik Ezzouguari
Shadow-puppet figures suspended between a stateless sky and a desert emptied of life: Chafik Ezzouguari deliberately breaks with what is “visually correct” to question society.
The artist
Career
Born in Ksar El Kebir in 1960, Chafik Ezzouguari lives and works in Mohammedia and is deeply involved in national cultural life. Close to literature and especially poetry, he has developed what he calls an “aesthetics of creation”. Having spent several years in Spain, he witnessed the slow deterioration of living conditions there and translated these deep changes into his work.
An art in rupture
Ezzouguari cannot conceive his work outside the essential social questions facing Moroccan culture. He does not hesitate to make premeditated, reflective breaks with convention, and shows a firm intransigence towards the way art is conceived and produced.
