Chaibia Talal
Born in 1929 in the Doukkala region, Chaïbia Talal never went to school. Married very young and widowed at fifteen with a son, Hossein, she earned a living through modest work before taking up painting in the early 1960s, after a dream she would describe for the rest of her life.
The artist
Her painting looks like no one else's: pure colour straight from the tube, broad flat areas outlined in black, frontal figures with huge eyes. She painted the Moroccan countryside of her childhood, brides, musicians, festivals and fantasias, with total freedom and a great deal of humour.
Noticed in the mid-1960s by the painter Ahmed Cherkaoui and the critic Pierre Gaudibert, she was soon exhibiting in Europe, where her work was compared to art brut and the CoBrA movement. She died in Casablanca in 2004 and is now one of the most sought-after figures in Moroccan art.
