Career
Born in Tetouan in 1968, Hamid Alaoui lives and works between Morocco and Spain. For more than thirty years he has devoted himself to painting, nourishing his research with travel and study, and working in large formats.
An expressionism of the soul
His canvases seek to blur the line between reality and its representation, so that the painting becomes a vision, a door open onto the unsayable and onto a sense of the sacred, as in “Les Sept hommes”, his evocation of holy spirits, or in “Al Andalouse” and “Tawaam Errouh” (“The Soulmate”). Beyond the figure of woman, his themes are diversity, peace and social, political and religious coexistence between peoples. Ornament, colour and matter come together in a language that aims at the timeless and universal.
