The artist
Career
Born in Marrakech in 1968, Mohamed Mourabiti is self-taught. Having left school to work, he imposed on himself a strict timetable to learn painting from the art teachers of the Jaber Ibn Hayyan lycée in Casablanca, then chose occupations that left him as much time as possible for his passion. He founded the Al Maqam art space in Tahannaout, where he lives and works, and was in residence at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris in 2007-2008.
Between painting and poetry
Mourabiti’s work is built on traces and layers, in which matter, sign and colour hold the memory of places. His long companionship with writers runs through it: exhibitions around Michel Butor, artist’s books with Mustapha Nissaboury, Abdelhak Serhane and Adil Hajji, and “La Chemise de l’air” with Adonis. From Al Maqam, he has made Tahannaout a meeting place for artists and poets.
