The artist
Career
Born in Salé in 1981, Mustapha Akrim grew up close to the world of building work, which became the ground of his art. He graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan in 2008, where he trained in Faouzi Laatiris’s “Volume and installation” workshop, and lives and works in Rabat. He belongs to the “Generation 00” of Moroccan artists, who set out to invent a new visual language and broke with the aesthetics of the postcolonial period.
The building site of memory
His installations question the nature of work and the difference between building and making art, against the backdrop of a society in constant change. In “Iqraa – Work in progress” he brings together protest, aesthetics and politics around labour and education; in “Collective Memory – 70-85” he appropriates the Moroccan dirham, the most widely circulated image of official postcolonial culture, to show how visual representation shapes political representation.
